Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born February 5th, 1984 on a small island called Madeira, just off the coast of Portugal. He is the youngest of four, having one older brother and two sisters. they grew up in a very working-class area of Santo Antonio close to Madeira’s capital city. Ronaldo’s parents both worked hard to support the family although this wasn’t without hardship. His father’s heavy drinking was a big problem for the family. Ronaldo often tried to persuade his father to enter rehab and address this problem. But unfortunately, he never did. Sadly, in 2005 Ronaldos father Jose Dinis Aveiro died of alcohol-related kidney disease.

By the time Ronaldo was 10 he showed astonishing promise as a football player. A young boy who ate slept, and drank football. It’s all he ever wanted to do. Often missing meal time or sneaking out of school so he could play. Just 6 years later in 2001 Manchester United signed him for $12 million. A record-breaking deal for a young man of 16. 8 years later, it’s 2009 and Ronaldo makes the headlines again with another record-breaking transfer to Real Madrid. After speculation about his commitment to Manchester United, the Spanish football club paid an eye-watering $131 million.
